Gila Rally and Polo Games

Greetings from your New Mexico Airstream Unit Rally Team!!

Itinerary  for the Quemado Lake & Polo Rally, August 19-23

Following is the itinerary for our rally. This is being held with the new Mexico Holiday Rambler groups, and should be a lot of fun. There will be POLO GAMES every day while we are there, and the finals and awards will be Sunday evening. As you can see by the itinerary, we have lots to do.

To get to Pinon Campground, go south from Quemado on State Rd 32 approximately 9 miles to the turnoff to the Quemado Lake turnoff. Turn left and follow the road for 3 miles, (it becomes gravel), past Snuffy’s Steakhouse on the left, and the El Caso Polo Grounds on the right to the lake. Continue up the hill to the Pinon Campground. (It’s at the top.We will be in Group Campground B. There will be  WBCCI signs for direction).

If you’ve never been to Quemado Lake, and to the campground, you’ll be in for a surprise. It’s a well kept campground, and the lake is beautiful. Bring your fishing poles, for fun catch & release fishing. If you have a canoe, or a kayak, bring those for a wonderful afternoon on the water. Of course the competition at the Polo Games will be going on during the day. There will be a covered area for viewing. They usually invite the group for dinner on Sunday evening at their “Bunkhouse”.

This is a dry camping area, but for those who need electricity, there is another campground just below Pinon called Juniper, and there are first come, first serve, electric sites there. Check it out on Google, under the Gila National Forest. I can try to svae someone a spot if you need me to. I will pay for the site, and then you can pay me.

PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU CAN COME. I’ve had several decline because of travel.

To get to Quemado, leave early and go west via I-40 to exit 89 (st rd 117), and visit El Malpais, the arch and the very rugged countryside. Very little traffic.

OR, go on I-25 to Socorro, and west on US 60. Stop at Magdelana for lunch and visit the VLA, the  campground at Datil, Pietown and into Quemado. Good road with more traffic, but nice and straight.

MORE WILL FOLLOW. Let Me Know.
